Rally America is excited to announce today that UTV racing will join the 2018 Rally America National Championship for select events in preparation for a full UTV season in 2019. UTVs will make their debut in July at the upcoming Rally Colorado.

UTVs are a good addition to Rally America as a way to complement our existing classes of top-tier rally cars,” said Bill Fogg, Rally America owner and president. “They’re an inexpensive entry point to rally competition, a great way to help expand entry lists and will be a positive impact on our events, as well as a lot of fun for both racers and spectators. We’re eager to welcome them to action in Colorado this summer.” Fogg went on to say, “We’ve considered the inclusion of the growing UTV community in rally for a number of years but we just weren’t ready. NASA Rally Sport led the way and demonstrated it can be a good platform for rally racing.

For the 2018 season, UTVs will debut in two broad classes, Turbo and Non-Turbo within the Rally America National Championship event at Rally Colorado on July 20-21.

“UTVs are a great opportunity to welcome new faces into the sport of rally,” said professional rally, rallycross, and drifting star Stephan Verdier, who plans to compete in the new class. “They’re very user-friendly and durable—you can race them one weekend and ride trails for leisure with your family the next weekend. They also only require safety upgrades to be race-ready, making them very affordable and approachable for competitors of all ages and backgrounds.”

Industry veteran Cory Sappington will be the UTV Class Manager and Technical Director for Rally America UTV competition. As one of the first professionals to bring UTV racing to a major stage, Sappington developed the current UTV rules used in Best In The Desert (BITD) and SCORE off-road competition. The Rally America UTV classes will incorporate these same rules for safety and UTV car build with a few rally relevant additions while also adhering to existing 2018 Rally America Performance Rally Rules.

Wow, I am so excited to be a part of the Rally America family!” said Sappington. “I believe UTVs are a perfect match for rally racing. All wheel drive, great suspension and lots of power, what could be better? As the

Rally America UTV tech director, I look forward to building the Rally America UTV class into the next big thing! Come experience the Rally America adventure in your UTV!”
The announcement of the UTV class opportunity at Rally Colorado is accompanied with an extension of the early entry fee to June 15, 2018.
