Defending Winner Arkadiusz Gruszka Highlights Open Entries for 2018 Southern Ohio Forest Rally
2017 Southern Ohio Forest Rally overall winner Arkadiusz Gruszka headlines the Open class entry list for the second annual edition of the event, taking place next Friday and Saturday. Gruszka, who won six stages on the way to last year’s victory, is one of 11 Open entries currently scheduled to compete in the popular event, the fourth one on the 2018 Rally America National Championship calendar.
Gruszka dominated the 2017 Rally America season on the way to his first Open national championship, winning five rounds (including both the Zaleski Forest Rally and Scioto Trail Rally within SOFR) on the way to a 58-point lead over PMR Motorsports’ Tim Rooney. While Gruszka and his Mitsubishi Mirage RS have yet to return to the top step of the podium in 2018, he and co-driver Maciej Sawicki will be looking to replicate last year’s form of six stage victories in the return to SOFR.
Joining them on the Open entry list will be Piotr Fetela and Dominik Jozwiak, the series’ most recent win-ners after scoring overall victory at Rally in the 100 Acre Wood in March. Fetela didn’t compete at SOFR last year, running only at the Lake Superior Performance Rally in his new Ford Fiesta after years of com-peting in an older-model Subaru.
They’ll also face Joseph Burke, who returned to the stages for the first time in five years with an entry at 100AW. While he failed to finish that race, Burke’s father Seamus was among the most exciting drivers to watch at SOFR last year, winning multiple stages outright in his Group 5 Ford Escort. The younger Burke will team with Ole Holter in the JRD Lancer Evolution with hopes of returning to a Rally America podium for the first time since placing second overall at 100AW in 2013.
More Open entries for the event will be formally announced in the coming days.
The 2018 Southern Ohio Forest Rally takes place on May 18-19, 2018 in McArthur and Chillicothe, OH. It will serve as the fourth round of the 2018 Rally America season. More information on the event and series is available at rally-america.com and southernohioforestrally.com.
