Driver // James Robinson
James is an 11 year Powertrain Development Engineer for Honda R&D, the research arm of the automotive company responsible for the development of V6 engines for Honda and Acura vehicles sold here in the U.S., and around the world.
On top of his Engine research and development experience, James possesses extensive racing knowledge from his involvement in many types of motorsport disciplines. He gained much of his racing background from Team Honda Research, an after work Honda supported program allowing their engineers to grow their knowledge of Honda products through their passion for racing. This afforded James to enter the SCCA ProRally from 2001-2004, plus some side Canadian rally events, before rejoining the Rally America National Championship in 2006 in the Production Class.
James also has extensive experience developing a Honda Element in Formula Drift and campaigning an ex-Le Mans NSX at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. In 2011, James piloted a converted road race B-Spec Honda Fit to first place in the Exhibition Class at Pikes Peak. That same Honda Fit is now used as his Rally America B-Spec Championship rally car.
“Honda Fit is very much at platform that rewards momentum,” added James, “The overall balance of the car lends itself nicely to Rally, as it can be easily set up to turn in quickly even in snow / gravel. It also is extremely efficient and gets great mileage on regular grade pump gas!.”
James cites his older brother, Nick Robinson, as his rally inspiration, having worked on his brother’s service crew in the SCCA ProRally days.
How did you get started in Rally or Rallycross?
My First experience in rally racing was at the 2001 Ski Sawmill Rally School. We competed in a 1996 Honda Civic 3 door and placed 3rd overall and 1st in G2. I was hooked!
What are your future goals?
My goals for this year are to improve my driving capability and to further improve the Honda Fit B-Spec platform.
